چکیده

We report on the design and construction of a new, tuneable, 1.5 cell 17 GHz RF gun and improved beamline. Emittance compensation in the new beamline is achieved with a 6.5 cm long, 0.5 T solenoid placed immediately after the RF Gun. Simulations predict a normalized rms emittance of 0.5 πmm-mrad for a 1 ps, 0.1 nC, 2.4 MeV beam. Emittance measurement diagnostic slits have also been designed and constructed. This gun will operated with 50 ns, approximately 5 MW, pulses from a 17.13 GHz klystron amplifier built by Haimson Research Corp. Initial cold tests of the new gun have been performed. The on axis field profile of the RF gun has recently been measured using a "bead hang" technique developed at MIT to forgo the need of a hole in the cathode as required by the more conventional "bead pull" measurement. A balanced field profile was obtained.

High Power Testing of a 17 GHz Photocathode RF Gun

We report experimental high power test results on a high gradient 17 G H z RF photocathode gun. The 1 2 cell, π -mode, copper cavity was tested with 5-10 MW , 100 ns, 17.145 G H z pulses from a 24 MW Haimson Research Corp. klystron. A maximum surface electric field of 250 MeV/m was achieved corresponding to an on-axis gradient of 150 MeV/m. The gradient was verified by a preliminary electron be...

PBPL Publications: 2009-00027 PUBLICATION ELECTRON EMISSION CHARACTERIZATION OF MG PHOTOCATHODE GROWN BY PULSED LASER DEPOSITION WITHIN AN S-BAND RF GUN

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been proposed several years ago as a suitable technique to deposit a pure Mg film over a radio frequency (rf ) gun Cu backflange in order to obtain a high efficiency photocathode surface for the generation of high brightness electron beams. In this paper we report preliminary experimental results on the emission properties of a PLD grown Mg film within the high...

Photoelectron beams from the UCLA rf gun

A high brightness, low emittance photocathode rf gun is starting operation at UCLA as an injector to a 20 MeV linac. This linac will initially be used to drive FELs, plasma wakefield accelerators, and to test plasma lenses. The gun is a 1 89 cell ~r-mode standing wave structure running at 2.856 GHz, and has a copper photocathode. In the initial commissioning of the gun, photoelectron beams of u...

Photocathodes and DC Guns for Next Generation Light Sources

A new class of synchrotron light sources, based on the use of superconducting electron linear accelerators and beam recirculation with energy recovery, is currently under active consideration. The injectors for such accelerators must deliver high brightness electron beams with appropriate RF time structure and the full average beam current. Various photoemission cathodes have been demonstrated ...

Producing and Measuring Small Electron Bunches

Significant progress has been made in the last few years in ultra-short and high-brightness electron beam production and measurements. For many applications, such as laser and high-frequency RF (W-band) accelerators, and high-gain harmonic generation free electron laser, electron beams with bunch length and transverse emittance smaller than optical wavelength are required. The status of such sm...
